The Police department is responsible for police functions as specified by the Code of Virginia and in cooperation with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office. Due to the very high volume of motor vehicle traffic on U.S. 220, the Town police devote a large amount of time to traffic safety. This includes enforcing the speed limits, response to accidents, enforcing red light and stop sign compliance, assisting drivers/vehicles that have issues ranging from directions to break downs.
The police department also responds to other criminal activity as needed, including in smaller numbers, any offense occurring in larger jurisdictions, as well as some items that relate to smaller communities more frequently.
Boones Mill has mutual aid with surrounding agencies which permit not only more coverage but access to resources that benefit each other and the communities served.
